“Almost all aspects of life are engineered at the molecular level, and without understanding molecules we can only have a very sketchy understanding of life itself.”  Francis Crick

Our lab is interested in examining molecular biological and physiological aspects of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Non-Cholerae Vibrionaceae. One focus lies on the study of probiotic E. coli and their ability to colonize solid tumors which leads to regression of the tumor tissue. To distinguish probiotic properties of typical E. coli we started a genome sequencing project of seven different probiotic strains. Another research interest is based on the investigation of the incidence of Non-Cholerae Vibrio spp. in human stool samples to characterize virulence determinants and evaluate their virulence potential.

The lab of Florian Gunzer is a part of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene. The institute is located at the Medical Theoretical Center (MTZ) and belongs to the Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus of the TU Dresden.
